Egon Schiele
Austrian, 1890-1918

We are actively seeking to acquire work by Egon Schiele.

Austrian-born Egon Schiele (1890-1918) was an expressionist figurative artist living and working in Vienna, Prague and Budapest at the turn of the 19th century. Schiele was impressed by the linear, two-dimensional style of his fellow countryman Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) and the Vienna Secessionists, who spoke out as an artists’ group against the stiff academic conventions of the historical school, which predominated the art world at the time.

Schiele depicted his figures contorted in their compositional arrangement, intentionally conjuring up tension and fragility. His decadently coloured portrait drawings and nudes are distinguished by their erotic features. The artist was also fascinated by his own appearance and made a multitude of self-portraits, which included a handsculpted bronze made in 1917 shortly before his death and cast in 1980 by the Collectors’ Club, Vienna.
