Oskar Hofinger (Sculptor)
Austrian,

Oskar Höfinger was born in Golling on Erlauf, Lower Austria, in 1935. He currently lives and works in Vienna. As a child, Höfinger was captivated by nature and the physical qualities of objects.

He apprenticed at a ceramic factory in Krummnussbaum, and trained to become a ceramic designer under the tutelage of Hans Scheibner, sculpture, painter, and designer. He proceeded to study at the Technical College of Wood and Stonework Sculpture in Salzberg from 1952-56. His creations during this time did attract attention; one notable purchase of a small 'Pieta' by the Ministry of Education occurred in 1955. Increasing his education, he enrolled in the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, from 1956-61. Höfinger's training with Prof. Hans Andre was a pivotal moment, he became a sculpture who was immersed in the international art scene and new, avant garde concepts.

An expressionistic phase was followed by an interest in monumental cubist experiments during the 1960's. He has worked with wood, stone, bronze and stainless steel. His geometric and reductionistic work explores elements of symbolism, light and shadow while retaining a touch of figurative. For Höfinger, the angular form is the "logical result of a conscious reduction to the essentials. The visualization of the space and the possibility of a higher spiritual statement by the artist transformation to crystallization and high freedom of aesthetics." His sculptures range from increasingly abstract, columnar figures to spatially expansive forms reaching out from its nucleus. Höfinger is a member of the leading association of artists, the "Viennese Secession".
