Pietro Barucci
Italian, 1845-1917

Pietro Barucci was an Italian artist who rarely strayed from the themes and subjects of his Roman birthplace.  In the present work, Barucci paints a scene celebrating peasant life on the Roman Campagna. Here, villagers are celebrating the local wine festival. The artist’s deft touch and keen attention to detail, expression and emotion reveal a narrative that is both realistic in execution but also in plausibility: the village elders are engaged in conversation as a nobleman looks on, on the right a young man courts a lady as her friend attends to her young child, in the center four gentleman are wound in enthusiastic conversation and sharing libations of red wine.
