Jacques Martin-Ferrieres
French, 1893-1972

Jacques Martin-Ferrières was born on August 6, 1893 in Saint-Paul, France.  He studied under the French academic painter Frederic Cormon (1845-1924) and with his father, the notable French Post-Impressionist Painter Henri Martin (1860-1943). He was most widely known for his landscape paintings and his brilliant still-life paintings.

He exhibited in Paris at the Salon des Artistes Français. His paintings were soon recognized for their excellence, supported with national prizes including a silver medal in 1923, the National Prize in 1925, and a Gold Medal and the Legay-Lebrun Prize in 1928.

With influence from his father Henri Martin, Jacques’s paintings were rich with swift and short brushstrokes: sometimes separated and sometimes overlapping, this technique is characteristic of the Post-impressionists.
