Gustave Jean Jacquet
French, 1846-1909

Gustave Jacquet was a student of William-Adolphe Bougereau (1825-1905). He debuted at the Salon in 1865 with a painting entitled La Reverie, painted very much in the style of his teacher.  In the following years, however, Jacquet abandoned Bougereau’s style and began painting small-scale canvases depicting sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth century scenes.  Around the same period, he also turned his attention to portraiture, often dressing his subjects in period-costume.  In 1875, Jacquet won a first place medal for his work, and in 1879, was decorated by the Legion d’honneur.
