| "When the bus pulled up, early one gray morning, to the terminal in Beijing, it looked as if it had traveled thousands of dusty miles. The roof of the bus was piled high with a jumble of luggage, and the windows were nearly opaque with accumulated grime from the journey. I was waiting to meet the man behind the beautiful paintings I had admired on my first exploratory journey to China. When the bus doors swung open, Wang Weidong was among the first of the weary travelers to emerge, hobbling along on his crutches, and wielding a huge cardboard tube. It was not without strong feelings that I approached him, knowing that he had journeyed all night just to meet me. When we later withdrew to the hotel, and he unrolled his tube of paintings, he revealed what seemed to be the perfect antithesis to the chaos of the early morning meeting. The paintings were calm, meticulous, and almost religious in their composition, everyday objects infused with quiet beauty. Several years have now passed since this first meeting, and Wang Weidong's serene paintings still continue to mesmerize. He was one of the artists featured in our Out of China exhibition in 1998, and I am now pleased to present Wang Weidong in his first solo exhibition at the Odon Wagner Gallery." | ||||||||||
