GASTON SEBIRE
French, 1920-2001

Gaston Sebire was born in Saint-Samson, Normandy, France, on August 18, 1920. He attended School in Rouen and then entered the postal service, working at night and devoting himself to painting during the day.

His first success came in 1953, when he won the honorable job of designing the costumes and decorations of L'Ange gris, a ballet written by Claude Debussy for the Marquis of Cuevas. Soon after, he moved to Normandy, where he buried himself in his paints, creating landscapes, marine scenes, floral still-lifes, etchings, and watercolors.

He made a progressive step in 1951 and moved to Paris, where he exhibited the following year at Galerie Visconti, and in 1956 at the famed Galerie Charpentier. He participated in Group shows in London, Munich, Washington and Japan. After receiving the Prix de Critique in 1953 and the Greenshields prize in 1956, his abilities and instinctive talent as an artist were undeniable. His work was acquired by the Museum of Rouen and the French Government.

Painting was Sebire's true passion in life until his death in 2001. He said of painting, "When the snow falls, I can't stay indoors. I set out with my paint box. I paint outdoors from nine in the morning until five at night."
