John Macdonald is a Canadian painter, born in Prince George, British Columbia. After graduating from Emily Carr in 1987, he lived and worked in Vancouver for a number of years.Macdonald chooses to paint in a manner that is engaged with historical tradition, in both a conceptual and formal sense. His subject matter includes landscapes, seascapes and people engaged in various activities - swimming, fishing, and sometimes just 'watching'. His figure paintings are narrative compositions, often cropped in such a way that seems informed by snapshot photography. This cropping, along with his methodology -which sometimes involves obscuring the image with a hazy veil of paint- gives his pictures anostalgic resonance. John Macdonald currently resides on Salt Spring Island with his wife, painter Patricia Murphy Macdonald, and their daughter. |
