Chinese Textiles
Cotton, Hemp and Embroidery, 30 x 26 inches, 76.2 x 66 cm

Price Code A
Inventory #13176

From the Li Qi sub-group, this hemp and cotton tubeskirt is embellished with lively warp ikat patterning alternating with bands of supplementary warp. A wide band of ikat with large human figures, highlights the hip line, as is customary.

Li women are skillful at dyeing and handloom-weaving. They not only utilize raw cotton and hemp fibers as their main materials for tailoring clothes but also have an excellent knowledge of the collection of wild plants to be used as dyestuffs. Experienced in the art of spinning yarn and weaving cloth from the age of seven or eight, they are able to combine their own original ideas with traditional techniques including those of colour arrangement and "tie-dyeing".
